How to Create an Online Social Security Account

How to Create an Online Social Security Account

The best way to keep up with your Social Security earnings and benefits, whether you’re drawing benefits now or in the future, is to create an SSA online account, known as a “My Social Security” account.

Why Open a My Social Security Account?

A “My Social Security” account provides secure access to your Social Security information, allowing you to verify earnings, estimate future benefits, and/or manage benefits. It’s also a convenient way to contact the Social Security Administration if you have an urgent question or need to request a replacement Social Security card.

What You’ll Need Before Creating An Online Social Security Account

You must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Social Security number to open your My Social Security account. You’ll also need:

  • Valid email address
  • U.S. Postal address or ID.me credentials
  • Experian credit report, which the SSA will access to verify your identification

A Step-by-Step Guide for How to Create an SSA Account Online

Step 1: Go to the My Social Security Sign-up Page at https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/.

Step 2: Create Your Account by clicking on “Create an Account.” If you have a Login.gov or ID.me account, you’ll use it to create your online Social Security account. If not, you’ll need to create one. (ID.me is not a government entity but is federally certified to provide secure digital identity verification to government agencies.)

Click on “Sign in with Login.gov,” or “Sign in with ID.me” and enter an email address and language preference.

Step 3: Verify Your Email Address. You’ll receive an email at the address you provided, asking you to click a link to confirm your email address and create a password.

Step 4: Set Up a Password. Your password must be at least 12 characters long and should be unique to this account.

Step 5: Set Up Two-Factor Identification. Choose a method for the SSA to use when you sign in to your SSA account in the future. Then complete the form that asks for information the SSA can use to confirm your identity.

Step 6: Complete Your Profile. Now that you have an account, review the information the SSA has and update it as necessary:

  • Personal information
  • Employment history
  • Bank account information (for direct deposit of payments).
